Secrets of Chucao

A
day tour to remote Lake Rupanco, comprising an easy trek
and boat journey on the lake.
Departure from Zapato Amarillo Lodge at 8.30am, followed by a one-and-a-half
hour or so journey over open countryside, and skirting wonderful
Lake Rupanco, surrounded by steep, heavily-forested hills.
On the opposite side of the lake the Salto de Calzoncillo
Waterfall plunges to over 800 feet into its depths, and
the pointed “Puntiagudo” towers above the green
rainforest like a small “Matterhorn”. The trek
will follow a rocky path along the southern banks of the
lake, through woods and over streams with simple tree-trunk
bridges (cuicuis), and also a suspension bridge, until we
reach the upper end of the lake. The trek will last about
two-and-a-half to three hours. In Las Gaviotas we will enjoy
a typical mid-day meal at a local family’s house.
We will travel by motor boat on crystal-clear Lake Rupanco,
along its heavily-forested northern bank, until we come
to a small beach: a splendid place to swim in the lake,
surrounded by Valdivian rainforest, exotic birds and with
a view across to bizarre, rocky Puntiagudo (lack of mist
permitting). We then cross back over the lake by boat to
join the bus back to Puerto Octay. Arrival in Puerto Octay
will be about 7.30 pm.
